Veterans Food Drive

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Grade 6 Students in Action Club have organized and will be running a food drive starting on November 1st and ending on November 16th. The collected food will be going to the Veterans Food Bank, as Remembrance Day is coming up and we would like to show our appreciation for our Veterans.  This also connects to our learning in preparing for the upcoming Remembrance Day assembly that Room 7 and Room 8 will be hosting.

Please bring non-perishable food items such as: soup, pasta, baby food, cereal, peanut butter, protein or granola bars, trail mix and canned goods like fish or vegetables. Any other non-perishable items that you think of are welcomed to be donated. Don’t forget to try and bring some gluten free or nut free items in case of anyone with allergies.

Social Studies/ Family Community

This week we focused our attention on what makes our family a community. We discussed the idea that in every community we are responsible for certain things. As a class, we brainstormed jobs that each of the students are responsible for at home. ie; walk the dog, clean my room, do the dishes, do the laundry, take care of my siblings.

Happy Halloween from the Grade 1 team!

Halloween
Our class had a great Halloween Dress Up day on Friday. We started the day with some fun learning activities like, Guess that SkeletonRoll and Draw a Monster, Spider Math and of course our school Halloween Parade. The energy in the school was fantastic!

Math

We have been learning about teen numbers in math. 10+1=11, 10+2=12 etc.... We have been using the Montessori material to understand the concept of the teen numbers and playing games like Tic-Tac-Teen. We are also practicing subitizing. Subitizing is when you look at a number of objects and automatically know how many there are without even counting. We practiced our subitizing using dice and dominos and by playing the game Splat!

Language Arts

This week we focused our attention on the letter Rr and Hh and the sounds they make.  During Daily 5 students have been working on writing; either labeling their spooky pictures they drew or writing their very own Halloween comic strips. We also did a journal entry where the students wrote about what Mrs. Proctor should be for Halloween. Suggestions from students in their journals ranged from me dressing up as a pumpkin, a black cat, a fairy, and even a witch. You will all have to wait until October 29th to find out what I decide to dress up as!

Science

In Science, during the month of October, we are doing a mini unit on pumpkins. So far we have done a comparison between our pumpkins in the class. Using a Venn diagram we discussed and recorded the similarities and differences of two of our pumpkins.  We also did a scientific sketch of our pumpkins and will be labeling them next week. In the following week, we will be learning about the life cycle,  parts of a pumpkin, making predictions of how heavy the pumpkins are and estimating how many seeds are inside.

Social Studies

In social studies, we continue to learn about our families. Thank you to everyone who filled out the yellow form that was sent home to do together.  The past week, we have been discussing what foods are special in our families.  In class, we viewed 5 different families and learned a little about their cultures and their traditional food favourites. We then shared and discussed what our family likes to eat.

We have also been discussing who is part of our family. The students drew their very own family tree. As we viewed each other's family trees we discussed how are families are the same and different.

 Move-ember Challenges

November is movement month at LBS! We are encouraging students to be active throughout the winter with a movement challenge for move-ember :).

Students are encouraged to keep track of their movement minutes outside of school time from November 1-30. The class that earns the most movement minutes at the end of the month will earn a special reward! Please support your child in tracking their movement minutes. A hardcopy tracking sheet will be sent home on October 29th.

Let’s encourage each other to be active and healthy! See the video for more information about our at school and at home challenges for the month.

October 12th-15th

Hello Room 10 Families,

We have been having fun in Grade One! Lets first talk about our Montessori Great Lessons.  We first learned about how the Earth was formed. We discussed the layers of the Earth. When it first began to form, the Earth was so hot that it was just made of whirling gasses. As the Earth spun in space it began to cool quickly as its size is so small. The particles at the outer edge became cold and they shrank, huddling together they hurried toward the center of the earth. They then became hot though and as they became hotter they expanded and hurried back toward the edge - the coolness of space. For hundreds of million of years this dance continued. Finally, the particles cooled and settled down. The heavier particles sank to form the core, the lesser particles formed the mantle and the lightest particles remained on the outside and slowly formed a crust. We demonstrated this concept by using honey, water and cooking oil. Even when shaken, the particles of the three materials demonstrated the nature of things. Honey (heaviest), water (medium heaviest), and the cooking oil (the lightest). Here are some photos of our experiment. After the demonstration everyone made their very own Earth with the layers out of playdough.

Our second demonstration for the Great Lessons was on volcanoes. The heaviest particles on Earth sank to the center of the planet. They became solid because of the great pressure Earth exerts on its core. The mantle, between the core and the crust, remained liquid and it was very hot. This molten rock wanted to expand; it wanted to rise up to where it was cooler, but the crust was blocking its way. So it burst out!

Crazy Hair Day

On Thursday, October 14th we had a crazy hair day. We had many original and fantastical hairstyles at school. Students in Room 10 drew Zentangle crazy hair pictures using our knowledge of lines.

Science

In science, we continued our discussion on translucent and opaque colours. We made our very own stained glass window ornaments using white glue and food colouring.

Language Arts

The letter/sounds reviewed this week were Tt and Ss. Next week will be the letter/sounds Hh and Rr. We also started learning about story writing. Our focus this week was telling a story using first, next, then, last. The students brainstormed ideas as a class. After the story was written the students in their table groups drew illustrations for a part of the story.

Math

We recently have been focussing on how to make ten which leads us into the introduction of the Montessori golden beads and place value. Questions answered during this lesson is what happens when you have ten ones? "They move to the tens place." What happens when you have ten tens? "That makes 100 so they move to the hundreds place." In the following weeks we will be focussing our math work periods on teen numbers. "ten and 1 make 11", "ten and 2 make 12", etc....

Reminders

October 18th - PD Day (No school)
October 21st - PJ Day
October 22nd - LBS shirt day or white/blue day
October 29th- Wear your Halloween costume/ Halloween school parade (please no Halloween masks or weapons)

Have great long weekend!

October 4th - 7th

Hello Room 10 families,

As we enter into the Thanksgiving weekend, I just wanted to extend my gratitude and appreciation for all our students and families.

The Great Lessons

This week Ms. Midgley and I  began teaching the Montessori Great Lessons. We started our first lesson on Monday where we learned a theory about how the world became. We talked about how there are  many different ideas and beliefs and that this is only one theory. We really want students to understand that it's ok for them to agree or not agree with this theory and that there is no right or wrong answer, we can all believe in different ideas!

The first demonstration explores the big explosion that created stars. The students watched me as I popped a black balloon filled with star confetti to explain the explosion. Stars from inside the balloon spread across the classroom. We viewed the stars on the floor/mat and lit a candle to represent light coming to the universe. We then put the stars in water to show how the stars grouped together to form galaxies. The students then drew their very own representation of the theory thus far in their visual journals.

Math

In math we have been continuing to review our numbers to 10. We have been learning how a number can be represented in many different ways. We have played a few games that involve making 10. Ask your child how to play Make Ten this weekend.

Social Studies

In social studies, we began talking about different types of families and what makes our families special. We read the story "A Family is a Family is a Family," which talks about all different types of families and the students wrote a journal entry about what their family likes to do together.

Next week there will be a letter sent home for students/families to complete regarding each child's cultural background.

Science

In Science, we continue to learn about colour. Our focus was on the concept of translucent, transparent and opaque. We experimented with different types of paint to see which ones were translucent and which ones were more opaque. We then went on a scavenger hunt around the class to see if we could find items that met the criteria of the three concepts. Each student then demonstrated their understanding by drawing three pictures in their visual journals and covering them with a coloured opaque paper, a translucent piece of coloured tissue paper, and then a piece of plastic transparent overhead sheet. (There is a rainbow under the blue opaque piece of paper if you were wondering 😀)

Thanksgiving

This week we talked about Thanksgiving. We read a few stories and brainstormed all of the things we are thankful for. As a class we came up with a list that included mom, dad, trees, sun, friends, family, animals, food, etc...  After the brainstorm, the students wrote their words on their very own turkey.

Signs of Fall

We have lately been discussing the signs of fall. Leaves falling from trees and plants is a big sign to us that fall is here. We traced leaves from our Montessori leaf cabinet and then decorated them using our knowledge about lines.

Indigenous Learning

This week we observed Orange Shirt Day. Our learning is ongoing and not limited to just this past week. We learned what the word Indigenous meant and that we live on Blackfoot land.

We read many stories (Shi-shi-etko, Stolen Words, and Amik Loves School) and viewed a video to learn about residential schools. We had discussions and brainstormed 'how school should feel'. Words such as safe, happy, fun, comfortable, relaxed, respected, loved, and kind were written on individual feathers and displayed for the whole school to read and emulate.

 Nature Patterns

We are spending as much time as possible outside learning. The students demonstrated their understanding of pattern making with items from nature. Can you guess what the core is for both patterns below?

Water Bottles/Proper Utensils
Due to COVID protocols, we are unable to use our water fountains for drinking. They can be used as a filling station for water bottles though. Please ensure a water bottle is sent with your child each day. Also please pack your child proper utensils for snack and lunch.

Reminders:
