November 15-22

Science

Second Great Lesson has started in room 10 and 11. We learned that gases, specifically oxygen, formed in the atmosphere allowing living things to develop on Earth. We explored the five earliest life forms; bacteria, sponges, seaweed, sea worms and jellyfish.  We captured these 5 different living things in our visual journals.

Math

Friday, November 19th marked our 50th day of school.  The students played Race to 50.  By rolling a dice and using ones and tens students raced to get to the number 50!

Social Studies

In social studies, students have been identifying what groups they belong to,  and ways we belong to more than one group at the same time. Groups brainstormed and discussed in class were family, school, our city (Calgary), sports groups like hockey, swimming, dance, and gymnastics, as well, a few students identified Canada and Earth as a group we belong to. Our focus next will be how do these groups benefit us, what can help us identify different groups and communities and what our rights and responsibilities are at home, at school, and in groups and communities.

                                                        Gymnastics

                                                        Family

                                                     City

Language Arts

In animated literacy, we have been learning about the letter C and G which both have a hard sound and soft sound.  We learned some rules and chants to help us figure out the sounds.

We will be hosting virtual Learning Conferences on November 25 at 4:00-7:30 and November 26 at 8:00-1:00. Please ensure you have your PowerSchool account set up so you can book your conferences when they open later this month.

Language Arts

This week the Grade One Team introduced spaghetti and meatball writing to learn about the importance of spacing between words and letters when writing. Our next step next week is to implement this strategy in our daily writing work. We also focused on the letters Kk and Ff  and the sounds they make. As well, we learned when a and r are together in a word the r is controlling and together they make the sound 'R'. As a whole class, we spelled and read words like far, star, mark, dark, mark, park, stark, part, dart etc....

Remembrance Day

Students in Room 8, 10, and 11 used the work of American artist Georgia O'Keeffe as inspiration for the creation of poppy art for Remembrance Day. Three different mediums were used; water colour, oil pastels, and chalk pastels.

 Social Studies

In social studies, we talked about our homes in our community. We then explored that homes are different depending on what community you live in. After reading a few books and viewing a some videos about homes around the world the students picked three types of homes they learnt about. Can you guess what kind of homes are drawn below?
