 Hello Room 10 families,

Leaf Man : Ehlert, Lois: Amazon.ca: Books

We had another great week! We celebrated the first day of fall on Wednesday, September 22nd. We spent sometime outside listening to the story Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. We then collected a bunch of leaves, berries, twigs, pine cones, and grass to make our very own creations.  Can you guess what we made by looking at the photos below?

Library/Learning Commons
Yesterday our class visited the Library for the first time. The students were able to explore the many books that the Library has to offer. Each student was able to check out two books that will stay at school in their cubbies. Our Library day will be on Thursdays. Hopefully later this year students will have the opportunity to bring books home. Ask your child what books they checked out?

Literacy
This week we talked about the letter 'Oo' with the Animated Literacy character Dr. Ollie Ostrich. Next week we will be focusing on 'Mm' and 'Xx'. Our Daily 5 has also been in full swing. Students complete each activity once throughout the week.

Hello Room 10 families,

International Peace Day

Yesterday we discussed what peace means to us in our classroom. We used our five senses to brainstorm many great ideas of what peace feels like (a warm blanket), sounds like (music), tastes like (yummy cake), smells like (flowers) and looks like (nature). Check out the photo above and ask your child what peace means to them.

Terry Fox Run

Today we had our annual Terry Fox Run! Days leading up to the run our class discussed the life of Terry Fox and the contributions he has made to cancer research. Many of our students dedicated the run to someone who they knew had been affected by cancer.

Conferences

What an amazing school year start-up we have been having at LBS! Typically, at this time of year, we host Parent Teacher Conferences in an Open House format. With restrictions due to Covid-19, our format has been adjusted. This year, each class has created a video to introduce families to our school, answer commonly asked questions and show details of how our class works. These videos will be released on Thursday, September 23, 2021 at 4:00 pm. If you have questions after viewing the video, please reach out. We are certainly missing seeing families in our school building and look forward to future opportunities where this may be possible. There will be no school on Friday, September 24th.

Happy Friday! What a Busy Month!

We are trying our best to deliver information in a timely manner. If you ever have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

At LBS, we use several channels for communication with families. Within our classroom, we use:

-Email (usually when we have a message or information specific to you/your child)

-School Messenger (whole class, time sensitive, needs immediate attention information)

-Blog (weekly updates, upcoming events and reminders)

Room 10 learning so far!

- We have been identifying, building, and drawing patterns.

- We have using many of the Montessori materials to learn our letters and sounds. Our focus during Animated Literacy has been on the letter Pp and Uu and will be moving on to the letter Oo next week.

- We did colouring mixing with both paint and play dough using primary colours (blue, yellow, red) to make secondary colours (orange, green, purple).

- We learned sketching techniques and applied our new learnt skill by drawing our school garden in our sketch book journals.

On Wednesday, September 15th we celebrated International Day. We painted two pieces each making a class collage using warm and cool colours.

Birthdays - Walk Around the Sun

Everyone wants to be remembered and cherished on the special day that they were born. The Montessori Birthday Walk Around the Sun is a lovely way to celebrate a child's birthday in a school setting.

Children love to hear about the journey from their birth to the present day. They want to hear stories, look at photos, and remember wonderful memories. They want to know how cherished they are, and how our life and world is better because they were born into our family or now belong to our class. The Montessori Celebration of Life is the perfect way to do this.

In preparation for the Birthday Walk Around the Sun, the parents of the birthday child are asked to bring in a picture or send a picture digitally for each year of the child's life, and write a short life story to accompany the pictures. I have attached a sample of a life story and a paper copy will be sent home during your child's birthday month. We will celebrate our July and August birthdays in June.

The Montessori Birthday Walk around the Sun is more than just a birthday celebration; it's a lesson in science, astronomy, and grace, and a community building experience for the entire class.

As we are still respecting health protocols, we ask that no items come from home (edible or non-edible treats). Thank you for your understanding.

A Peek at Our Classroom

We hope that we will be able to invite families into our classroom at some point this year, but in the meantime, here is a photo for you to see where your child spends most of their day.
