October 4th - 7th

Hello Room 10 families,

As we enter into the Thanksgiving weekend, I just wanted to extend my gratitude and appreciation for all our students and families.

The Great Lessons

This week Ms. Midgley and I  began teaching the Montessori Great Lessons. We started our first lesson on Monday where we learned a theory about how the world became. We talked about how there are  many different ideas and beliefs and that this is only one theory. We really want students to understand that it's ok for them to agree or not agree with this theory and that there is no right or wrong answer, we can all believe in different ideas!

The first demonstration explores the big explosion that created stars. The students watched me as I popped a black balloon filled with star confetti to explain the explosion. Stars from inside the balloon spread across the classroom. We viewed the stars on the floor/mat and lit a candle to represent light coming to the universe. We then put the stars in water to show how the stars grouped together to form galaxies. The students then drew their very own representation of the theory thus far in their visual journals.

Math

In math we have been continuing to review our numbers to 10. We have been learning how a number can be represented in many different ways. We have played a few games that involve making 10. Ask your child how to play Make Ten this weekend.

Social Studies

In social studies, we began talking about different types of families and what makes our families special. We read the story "A Family is a Family is a Family," which talks about all different types of families and the students wrote a journal entry about what their family likes to do together.

Next week there will be a letter sent home for students/families to complete regarding each child's cultural background.

Science

In Science, we continue to learn about colour. Our focus was on the concept of translucent, transparent and opaque. We experimented with different types of paint to see which ones were translucent and which ones were more opaque. We then went on a scavenger hunt around the class to see if we could find items that met the criteria of the three concepts. Each student then demonstrated their understanding by drawing three pictures in their visual journals and covering them with a coloured opaque paper, a translucent piece of coloured tissue paper, and then a piece of plastic transparent overhead sheet. (There is a rainbow under the blue opaque piece of paper if you were wondering 😀)

Thanksgiving

This week we talked about Thanksgiving. We read a few stories and brainstormed all of the things we are thankful for. As a class we came up with a list that included mom, dad, trees, sun, friends, family, animals, food, etc...  After the brainstorm, the students wrote their words on their very own turkey.
