Scholastic Book Fair

 Save The Date!

Dear families,

Mark your calendars! The fun and excitement of a Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! To adapt to our changing needs, Scholastic has developed a Hybrid Book Fair (in-school with a virtual link) to provide an opportunity for our students and families to experience the joy of reading together.

So, save the date! Our Scholastic Virtual Book Fair will take place on:

Friday, March 4th – Friday, March 11th

When it’s time to shop, you can choose to visit the virtual link and purchase online or send in cash for your child to purchase books in person. We will be sending home a letter with more information soon!

Happy reading!

Fitness Bingo at LBS!

 FITNESS BINGO AT LBS!

All of the classes at Lake Bonavista School are participating in a fitness bingo challenge from February 23-April 8! We wanted to share the bingo card with you so you can continue the fun at home! At school, each time a class completes a ‘blackout’ bingo card, they will be added to a draw and entered to win bonus recess time! If your family complete all of the exercises on a bingo card at your house, please notify your classroom teacher and your child’s class will receive an additional entry in the draw.

Each exercise on the bingo card is to be completed in an interval style - 20 seconds of the exercise, followed by 10 seconds of rest. In order to cross the activity off of your bingo card you must complete a minimum of 4 interval sets. If some of the exercises are unfamiliar, please ask your child to teach you the movement.

Feel free to check out the video below for a further explanation of the bingo challenge.

February Learning So Far!

Hello Room 10 Families! It has been a busy few weeks. I don't think I can even include all the things we have been up to so far but here is a quick glimpse of a few activities and learning opportunities we have had recently.

Ground Hog Day

Math

3D Scavenger Hunt

Math Problems
We have been making up our very own math story problems using either addition or subtraction.

Social Studies
We have been playing landmark games in social studies class. I have...Who has and Landmark Bingo were a hit. I hope you get to spend some time this weekend looking for landmarks in your community!

Language Arts

We have been working on sentence construction during our writing time. As a class we did a step by step drawing of a fish and then wrote a sentence that had all the W's (who? what? how? where? and when?)

         February is Kindness Month

Room 10 and 11 are responsible for this month's assembly which will focus on Kindness. We have been brainstorming ways to show kindness and why it is important to be kind.

Art

In art this week, we learned about Wassily Kandinsky. He felt he could express his feelings  through colour and shapes. We reinvented/recreated his well know art piece "Squares with Concentric Circles" by using heart shapes instead. The final product will be displayed in the school's display case for all to view.

Masks

Hello Room 10 Families,

As I'm sure you've heard, masks will no longer be mandatory for students to wear in school starting on Monday, February 14th. We had a talk as a class about how different families will want different things and we all have different beliefs and views. We discussed the importance of showing respect for everyone’s decision to wear or not wear a mask. We will not be asking our classmates to put one on, or take one off. If you could please review this with your child and discuss your expectations for your child regarding masks, I would appreciate it!

More masks and rapid testing kits provided by the government were also sent home this week.

January 24th-25th Classroom learning

 Hello Room 10 Families!

In social studies, we are learning about how to distinguish geographic features in our own community from other communities. Our first question we are going to explore and reflect upon is "What are some familiar landmarks and places in my community?”

What is a landmark? We viewed a few photos and came up with a definition for a landmark. It is a feature (like a building, signs, statues, and things in nature) found in a place that is easily recognized.

We then played a game to sort objects or features that are landmarks and ones that are not. The kids laughed when we had to compare a pig with a library. Which one do you think is a landmark?

In science, our "How do animals survive the winter?" unit is soon coming to a close. Everyone has been working hard finishing up their dioramas and even some have finished and taken them home. Please have your child talk about what they made and speak to what each part of their diorama represents. We look forward to our walking field trip on Thursday, January 27th at 1pm. The students are excited to get outside to learn! Make sure your child is dressed for the weather on that day.

In math, we continue to explore 2D shapes. We had fun playing Shape Detective. We used clues to figure out the secret shape by eliminating the shapes that did not go with the clues given. We enjoyed this activity so much that we came up with our own clues and had Mrs. Green figure out our secret shape.

In Daily 5, we are working with the at family during word work and making a "How to be Kind" poster during our work on writing time.  There has been some great ideas about how we can be kind such as; share, give a gift, make a friend, be silly, say nice things, eat ice cream together, and give a hug.
